ADHD Treatment Options

ADHD is a condition typically thought of as affecting children. However, adults can have it, too, and may have suffered since childhood and not know the problem. At Sisters of Hope in Psychiatry, serving Toledo and Ohio, Michigan, and Texas online, our nurse practitioners, Jacquel McCadney and Juanita Ellis, can diagnose and treat ADHD. But what treatment approaches can you expect for you or your child? Let's discuss.

Therapy and Lifestyle Management

Therapy is our go-to approach for treating ADHD and helping combat any of the unpleasant effects. Through therapy for ADHD at our Toledo, OH, office, you can learn to better manage the symptoms in you or your child. The treatment will begin with us figuring out the issues that are most plaguing you or your youngster, such as poor planning, procrastination, time management, and limited focus. We'll provide advice on ways to break down tasks into smaller ones to make large tasks more achievable.

Let's say the problem lies with time management. We'll educate you about how to learn to better schedule you or your child. This may include learning to make lists, setting alarms, and understanding the importance of delegating tasks when necessary.

On the other hand, maybe procrastination is the main issue. For this, we'll help you learn to make goals and reward yourself for achieving them. Changing your thought process to inspire yourself to begin the task is also important.

We can also advise you on lifestyle changes that can help with symptoms, such as getting exercise or sleeping enough.

Therapy for Relationship Struggles

This treatment may be to help the relationship between you and your child with ADHD or the one between you and your significant other (if you're the one struggling with ADHD). We'll listen to the issues you're having and help you figure out solutions that can assist. If it's for you and your child, it'll help you approach situations calmly to avoid escalating the issue.

Medication

Not everyone with ADHD requires medication. And you may not want to take this approach, which is fine. We'll work with you to find the right solution. However, if medication is the best option, we can prescribe a stimulant to you or your child to improve focus. We will continually adjust each patient’s medication, as needed.

Jacquel McCadney and Juanita Ellis of Sisters of Hope in Psychiatry, serving Toledo and Ohio, Michigan, and Texas online, are available for ADHD treatment. We offer the options of both therapy and medication, and the solution depends on preference and the severity of the condition. We can even improve relationships and work on confidence, which can take a hit from the symptoms of ADHD.
